The ethos of the IRC mirrors the core values of UCEA i.e. Believe, Belong and Become

Believe: Each student believes in the value of reading and in their ability to become a good reader

Belong: Each student realises they belong to a whole school reading community and that they each have a part to play in that community

Become: Through reading for pleasure and achievement students become lifelong readers and learners

Key aims and objectives of the IRC

To develop a reading for pleasure culture within UCEA
• To create a stimulating and vibrant venue which acts as the hub for reading within UCEA
• To be inclusive and to meet the reading needs of all the members of the UCEA community
• To support achievement and to develop student’s self confidence in themselves as learners through improved literacy levels
• To provide enrichment opportunities, both cultural and spiritual, through reading for pleasure and associated activities

Library Stock

10,700 books (5891 Fiction / 5006 Non-Fiction)
Fiction stock includes a Lower School section, Young Adult Library (Yearrs 9-11), Sixth Form and Staff library plus a large Manga and Anime section and Graphic Novel library. Non Fiction stock covers all areas of the school curriculum plus a well-resourced Wellbeing section.

Circulation figures – 6249 books borrowed between 1.9.16 and 26.4.17. The IRC has a fully automated Library Management System (LMS) called Eclipse which is available 24 hours a day, both at home and at school. The IRC also has 2 fixed PC’s, 10 laptops, 30 Kindles and 30 iPads.

IRC key roles and responsibilities

Working with English Department:

1. Years 7-9 have a fortnightly timetabled library lessons in the IRC with the emphasis on reading for pleasure and improving reading skills. 50% of these lessons are supported by the UCEA Pastors who offer a one to one guided reading support
2. Each student chooses an individual reading book which is kept in the teaching room and is used as a starter activity for every lesson
3. Each Year 7 students completes a Library Induction programme during their first term at UCEA – they are given a gift of a Roald Dahl book to start their reading journey at UCEA

Enrichment

After school Clubs – Manga Drawing Club, Board Games Club
Event Programme 2016-17 – key annual events such as National Book Week and Poetry Day (October), National Story Telling Week (January), World Book Day (March) and regular ad hoc events such as in 2016 - Shakespeare 400, 100th commemoration of The Battle of the Somme and Roald Dahl’s Birthday.
• Author visits ( min 1 per year) – December 2016, author Cliff McNish spoke to Years 7-9 in individual theatre talks and held a writing workshop for selected G&T students

Form Book Box Programme – All forms issued with a graded Book Box of 50 books that are used in Academic Review to develop literacy skills.
